Alexander Nimmo`s copy of his account of the survey made by him in the summer of 1806 of the northern, eastern and southern boundaries of Inverness-shire, which he undertook on Telford`s recommendation, whilst rector of Inverness Academy, for the parliamentary commission appointed to fix the county boundaries of Scotland.

Scope and Contents The copy is in Nimmo’s own hand, written up in the form of a journal, from the notes which he took in his pocket-book whilst engaged upon the survey. It is written on the rectos of the leaves, the versos being left for maps (folios 11 verso, 12 verso), notes, bearings, and additions to the text. A volume of county maps outlined in colour, with decorative cartouches in pen and wash. They are preceded by an index (folio i) and a map of the whole of Scotland showing the counties. The maps are based on ‘A general map of Scotland and Islands’ by James Dorret. They include a number of estates and the sites of several battles. The paper has the shield watermark with GR appendage used by James Whatman the younger from about 1762.

The bulk of the papers in this collection relate to the Canadian National Arctic Expedition, 1913-1918, and the part played in it by William McKinlay and the expedition leader, Vilhjalmur Stefansson. McKinlay's account of his experiences, especially those of being shipwrecked and marooned on Wrangel Island, off the coast of Siberia, were published by him in 'Karluk: the great untold story of Arctic expedition'.
